Have you ever heard about the bleeding glacier in Antarctica or Lake Natron in Tanzania that turns birds and animals into stones? If you have no idea of what we are talking about, then you are unaware of the strange things that are happening on earth at this moment.

Our planet is a beautiful yet crazy place with lots of bizarre incidents taking place as a result of nature. We have listed a few unusual things you probably didn’t realize happening here every single day. While some of these are cringe-worthy, some are so unusual and awe-inspiring that you may want to witness them.

1. Bleeding Glacier

This strange natural wonder looks like a gruesome scene on a remote glacier but what appears to be blood is a gushing stream of crimson-colored saltwater flowing from the Taylor Glacier. The mystery behind this phenomenon dated back to five million years, when the ocean flooded East Antarctica and formed a salty inland lake. The saltwater from the ocean got trapped in a basin that didn’t have light, heat, and oxygen. Over time, the water became more and more concentrated and too salty to freeze. And, when this saltwater passes through a small fissure in the ice, it reacts with oxygen and creates a bloodlike hue.

2. Never-Ending Wave

Twice a year, between February and March, a single colossal wave gushes from the Atlantic Ocean down the Amazon and its tributaries, running for hundreds of miles. This nearly endless, known as ‘Pororoca,’ is the largest and most dangerous tidal bore in the world.

It generates waves of up to 12 feet high which last for around half an hour. The stream is so ferocious that it breaks trees, destroys homes & livestock, and sweeps off the muddy water of the Amazon and its tributaries. Many surfers from around the globe head to the Amazon region to surf this destructive tidal bore.

3. Calcifying Lake

The frightful Lake Natron in Tanzania is infamous for turning animals and birds into stone. This strange phenomenon is due to the high amount of the chemical “natron” in the lake water that makes it extremely alkaline. The pH level of the water is as high as 10.5 that it can burn the skin and eyes of animals and birds that migrate to this place.

However, a few creatures live in the harsh water of Lake Natron, such as single fish species (Alcolapia latilabris), some algae and a colony of flamingos that breeds on the shore and feeds on the algae.

4. Living Rocks

Found in dense aggregations in the coast of Chile and Peru, these living rocks are a sea creature with no brain or sensory organs. They are completely immobile and feeds by sucking in water and filtering out microorganisms. Known as Pyura Chilensis, this creature is born male, becomes hermaphroditic at puberty, and reproduces by tossing sperm and eggs into the water. This organism also has the capability of self-fertilization. The locals eat it raw or in the stew and describe its taste as “bitter” and “soapy” with a “weird iodine flavor.”

5. Danxia Landforms

These picturesque cliffs, located in Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park in China, are formed from red-colored sandstones and conglomerates of largely Cretaceous age. Geologists believe that this landscape is a result of folding of layers oceanic crust. Danxia topography is spread in a circumference of more than 10 square kilometers of range and has lots of precipitous red yellow, orange, green, white, graphite, and gray cliffs, most of which are several hundred meters high. The peaks, peeping through the mist and clouds, produce mirage-like scenery of fantastic mountains and pavilions.
